- Anarchists and Anti-authoritarians in Solidarity
SOLIDARITY WITH JOCK PALFREEMAN
Jock Palfreeman is a 23 year old antifascist from Australian currently in prison in Sofia, Bulgaria. He is accused of murder and attempted murder, following an encounter with a group of 16 far-right football hooligans. After 2 years of trial he was sentenced in December 2009 to 20 years imprisonment.
In December 2007, Jock witnessed a gang of fascist football hooligans attacking two Roma men in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. Jock went to the aid of the men, putting himself in the middle of the attack. The Roma were able to escape, but the gang then turned on Jock. The fascists kicked and punched Jock, and then started collecting pieces of broken concrete and throwing them at his head. Jock was alone, and forced to defend himself against the gang of 16 drunken, violent fascists. As a result, one fascist (Andrei Monov) was killed and another (Anton Zahariev) injured. Monov’s father, Dr Hristo Monov, is a prominent Bulgarian doctor, with ties to the government and contacts in the legal system.
Jock has been in prison for two years. Police have beaten and threatened to kill him, and have openly lied about his case in court. Much of the evidence that supports Jock’s version of events has been destroyed or has gone missing. For example, a CCTV video tape which showed the brutal attack on Jock has been “lost” by police and then been retrieved, only to mysteriously explode — again while in police custody. The Bulgarian media has labeled Jock a murderer and a hooligan, and has consistently and systematically published lies and distortions about Jock and his case. The court has been repeatedly delayed due to witnesses and court officials failing to turn up.
Attacks against Roma in Bulgaria have spiked in recent years, and the far right has declared that the eradication of Roma from their territories is of utmost political importance. Their anti-Roma campaigns include both propaganda and violence. In February 2009, local fascists organised a rally in Sofia, demanding that Jock be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
We denounce the despicable conditions Jock has been forced to endure, and without hesitation raise our voices in a firm declaration of solidarity. Jock has dedicated his life to fighting against fascism, and is now facing 20 years in a Bulgarian jail because he chose to try to stop a fascist attack.
Of course we expect nothing else from the so called “Justice System”; the laws, the judiciary, the police, the prosecutors and all the various mechanisms and institutions which serve the interests of capital and the state. We are not interested in the construction of “innocent” and “guilty” by civic legality and all its lackeys; those who continually attempt to marginalise and criminalise comrades who with dignity fight for freedom and defend the persecuted.
Like every captive of the state, Jock is not alone. Our acts of solidarity for each other turn out to be acts for all. They affect all the exploited, inside and outside the prisons of capital in our common need to throw down the walls of oppression and misery everywhere, we know true “justice” will not exist until the destruction of all prisons and the culture that creates them.

Talk on the European Autonomist Movement
Jura Books
The European autonomous movement, mainly centred in the German-speaking countries
but spreading into various others, has been a major factor in radical European
politics for about thirty years. Gabriel Kuhn will give an overview of the
movement's history and its current state – questions from the audience are strongly
encouraged!
Growing up along the German-Austrian border, Gabriel was politicized in the
autonomous movement in the late 1980s. He has spent many years abroad and is
currently living in Sweden, but has always maintained strong ties to autonomous
politics. He is part of the editorial collective behind Perspektiven autonomer
Politik [Perspectives of Autonomous Politics], a book due to come out with radical
publisher Unrast Verlag in the spring of 2010. Gabriel has worked on several
publications with Unrast Verlag, and is the founder of Alpine Anarchist Productions.
He also works with PM Press in the US, and with the anarchist journal Brand in
Sweden.

Eco-workers
The environmental crisis that we face is the result of greed for power and profit. We recognise that capitalism cannot solve the environmental crisis it has created. Without revolutionary change to the way our societies operate we risk a future of unjust hardship and irreversible environmental destruction.
It is both possible and imperative to avoid this future.
Our alternative vision is of a world based on the principles of sustainability, workers' control and mutual aid. In this world all people will enjoy freedom, justice and equality. This world can only be created by those who make the products and perform the services: workers. Together we can creatively and collectively build the sustainable solutions we need.
Our group aims to engage with rank and file unionists, progressive environmental activists and everyday people. Through grassroots organising we will help build a popular revolutionary movement to create a better world. We welcome you to join us.
Come along to the next eco-workers meeting or send an email to jura[at]jura.org.au to get involved.
Always look on the bright side of life
Hi Jura Books friends and supporters,
There are four great events coming up that we'd love to see you at...
1) Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers
Film Screening organised by SACT, this Sat 15th Nov, 5pm, Jura Books. Entry by donation.
This film is the story of what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war. Acclaimed director Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, Outfoxed and Uncovered) takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. Iraq for Sale uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who allow them to do so.
NEW YORK TIMES: 'a horrifying catalogue of greed, corruption and incompetence'
HUFFINGTON POST:'Greenwald, the master of the issue-doc, has delivered a film that connects on both an emotional and an intellectual level. And, most importantly, it does so by letting the facts - and the victims of the war's privatization - speak for themselves.' Arianna Huffington
2) Walk Against Warming
Take action this Sat, 15th Nov, 11am, Martin Place.
Join thousands in a walk for renewable energy and a safe climate future. With vital decisions being made this year, it is crucial to fight now for urgent action and justice for those affected by climate change. Look for members of the Jura and Mutiny Collectives handing out a free anarchist paper on climate change.

3) Paolo Finzi talks on Anarchism in Italy
International guest speaker, Sat 22nd Nov, 6pm, Jura Books. Entry by donation.
Paolo Finzi has been a member of the editorial staff of the anarchist monthly magazine "A" since its foundation in 1971. He has written two books about the Italian anarchist militants Errico Malatesta and Alfonso Failla. Recently he produced a DVD and CD about the Italian anarchist folksinger Fabrizio De André. His last production was a double DVD (with booklet) about the Nazi extermination of the Gypsies.
In his talk at Jura Books he'll speak about the situation and perspectives of the Italian anarchist movement and will discuss with the audience the international situation and the role of anarchists. On demand, he may speak also about the history of Gypsies, their persecution along the centuries (expecialy during the Nazi regime) and the behaviour of Italian government against them today.
4) 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' and 'Lock Out The Landlords'.
Double Trouble Book Launch with author Iain McIntyre, Sat 29th Nov, 6pm, Jura Books. Entry by donation.
Iain McIntyre is the author of two excellent new publications from Homebrew Books. He will launch both books with a brief talk and a screening of archival footage from the AIDEX '91 anti-arms fair protests and 'Evictions', a film by Richard Lowenstein about anti-eviction struggles during the Great Depression. Discussion will follow.
Always Look On The Bright Side Of LIfe: The AIDEX '91 Story (144 pp):
In November 1991 over 1000 protesters blockaded the National Exhibition Centre in Canberra for 12 days with the aim of shutting down the Australia International Defence Exhibition. AIDEX ’91 saw the most police violence and highest number of arrests in the ACT since the Vietnam era. Although the exhibition was eventually able to go ahead the blockade caused enough disruption to ensure that no one would dare hold another arms fair on this scale in Australia again. The success of the protest came at a cost however with hundreds of demonstrators injured and their actions vilified in the mainstream media.
Alongside a detailed account of the protest itself the book traces the background of the blockade amidst the growth of opposition to the Australian arms industry during the 1980s. Using the words of the protesters themselves the book also explores the lessons of AIDEX ’91, the effect of the protest on a generation of Australian activists and the way in which similar strategies were used to stop the 2008 Asia Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition from occurring. The book features many photos from both the AIDEX ’89 and ’91 protests.
Lock Out The Landlords: Eviction Resistance, 1929-36 (44pp):
The economic depression of the 1930s saw thousands of Australians thrown out of their homes and into the streets. These actions however did not go unopposed. Across Australia pickets, occupations and protests were organised to disrupt and prevent evictions and auctions. Where these failed some took matters into their own hands wrecking the properties of landlords and real estate agents in revenge. This pamphlet chronicles just some of the many struggles that took place. It includes a chronology of actions as well as photos and quotes from those involved providing a fascinating insight into the events of the time. Originally released in 1997 this second edition adds photos and more detailed listings.
Both publications are available from Jura Books.
