Invasion/Sovereignty Day 2012
With Invasion/Sovereignty Day approaching and talk of a referendum for the Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal people, it's worth noting that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra. The Embassy, on the lawns of Old Parliament House, was set up, fought for and has been maintained by generations of Aboriginal activists to organise for Aboriginal sovereignty and justice. On 26th January, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy is inviting Aboriginal people and allies to meet, have discussions, and to get involved in the struggle for Aboriginal sovereignty.
If you can’t make it to Canberra, come along to the Invasion Day gig at Jura, featuring revo folk punk from Melbourne's A Commoners Revolt, alongside local favourites the BLAST, and Death Ghat from Aotearoa.
Other upcoming events at Jura include a talk on workers’ struggles in China on 10th February, and stay tuned for more details about an anarchist discussion series, our forthcoming inter-state publication, and as always, check out the new books in the shop and get involved at Jura!
This newsletter also contains news of community rallies and events, from the rally on 14th February to mark 8 years since the death of TJ Hickey, to Camp Anarchy in Melbourne on 10th-12th March.
We hope that your 2012 has gotten off to a good start, happy Chinese New Year, and happy 100th day of Occupy Sydney!

Contagious Strikes - Workers' Struggles in China
Friday 10th February, 7.00-9.00pm, Jura Books
In mid-2010, a strike wave rolled through China's factories, the most widespread and militant struggle of China's internal migrant workers so far. The struggle shook the Chinese regime and provoked a world-wide debate: Is this the beginning of the end of the low-wage-model that stands behind China's rise to the "factory of the world" and provides the rest of the world with cheap consumer products? The strikes continued in 2011, and together with riots and peasant uprisings they are indicators for the increasing pressure for social change in China.
This talk/discussion (including a ten-minute film) will focus on the strikes, the formation of a new working class movement in China, and the implications for social struggles around the world.
Jura is pleased to host this presentation by Ralf Ruckus, labour researcher/activist with a focus on the conditions and struggles of migrant workers in China (www.gongchao.org)

TJ Hickey rally: 8 years since his death - still no justice!
Tuesday 14th February, 10.30am, cnr George and Phillips St Waterloo
TJ Hickey died in February 2004 when his bike was rammed by a Redfern police vehicle driven by then-Constable Hollingsworth. There has been a Coronial inquiry cover-up, police and government cover-ups, and continuous protests, but 8 years later still no justice for the young Aboriginal man and his family.
The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991 made 339 Recommendations to stop Deaths in Custody. Not one of them has been implemented. Hundreds of Aboriginal people died before the report and hundreds of Aboriginal people have died since.
Join the Indigenous Social Justice Association in demanding an end to Aboriginal deaths in custody. Meet to demand a memorial place in the Block to remember TJ and all other Aborigines who die in custody.

Don’t Shoot the Messenger: WikiLeaks, Assange and Democracy
Friday 17th February, 6.30-8.15 pm, University of Technology Sydney (Room 02.04.13). Entry by gold coin donation
WikiLeaks, a free press publishing and media organisation, has revealed human rights abuses, war crimes and corruption in governments across the world. Yet the US Administration wants to close WikiLeaks down and prosecute its founder Julian Assange. International financial services organisations have blocked payments to WikiLeaks, denying them vital income. The Australian government has failed to take a stand against the political persecution of Assange. PM Gillard's assertion that WikiLeaks activities were illegal was proved to be false by an Australian Federal Police investigation. What does all this say about our democracy?
Come to a public forum presented by the Support Assange & WikiLeaks Coalition, with:
: Scott Ludlam, Greens Senator
: Christine Assange, mother of Julian Assange
: Humphrey McQueen, Historian, ANU
: Chaired by Mary Kostakidis

Camp Anarchy
10th to 12th March, Melbourne
Camp Anarchy is organised by the same people who brought you the Anarchist Melbourne Bookfair in August 2011. Its inspiration is Pinksterlanddagen: an anarchist camp held in the northern Netherlands for nearly 90 years (http://www.pinksterlanddagen.nl/). At the Dutch camp there are stalls, workshops, anarchist theatre and music and we hope to replicate this at Camp Eureka over the Labour Day weekend (March 10-12) in 2012.
Our aim is to bring anarchists, their families, friends and those new to the wide anarchist community together in a welcoming bush setting; to relax and share ideas, news, resources, skills, food and laughter.
If you want to book a stall, suggest a workshop, contribute to the camp reader, help out including with promotion, have a large marquee we can use for the weekend or can make a donation to the camp, please get in touch!

Climate camp
Helensburgh, 40 minutes south of Sydney
Join Jura collective members and friends at Climate Camp!
Climate Camp will be three days of sustainable living and community action in Helensburgh, 40 minutes south of Sydney on Dharawal land. We’ll be near Metropolitan Collieries, Australia’s oldest coal mine.
We are parents, youths, locals, and workers who are excited about coming together at Climate Camp ’09. We want to protect our precious water catchments from more damage and pollution by coal mining. We know coal is fuelling climate change – together we can begin the transition to a renewable future. People deserve good jobs in clean and safe industries.
Pitch your tent alongside hundreds of others – or stroll in for an afternoon – for great workshops, music, food and positive climate action.
If you're concerned about our future and want to do something about it, Climate Camp is for you. Fed up with government tokenism and corporate spin? Come and see how you can make a real difference.
Climate Camp is for all of us – because when it comes to water, climate and jobs, actions speak louder than words.
Climate change won’t just go away until we – that’s you and me – get together at Climate Camp ’09 with our kids and parents, our neighbours and friends, and begin building solutions together.
More information
Last year, the Camp for Climate Action at Newcastle was a resounding success, building to a climax in which over a thousand people joined a peaceful protest to stop trains transporting coal and focus the nation’s attention on the polluting coal industry.
Australia’s emissions are still rising. At a time when we need to be urgently cutting greenhouse pollution, Australian governments are approving new coal mines and considering the expansion of the Metropolitan Colliery mine that is already damaging Sydney and Illawarra’s water catchment.
Coal mining is destroying our health, our water and our climate. We need community action to demand a renewable future.

We will aim to critique the wave of responses to capitalism’s current predicament. It is an opportunity to collectivelly analyse it’s ‘new clothes’. As ordinary people ourselves, it is a chance to strategise together for solidarity with emerging and ongoing struggles for workers’ autonomy and control, peoples’ freedom of movement, sustainability, sovereignty and self determination.

Stand Against Rudd's Racism
June 20, 2009 will mark two years since the Howard government announced its Intervention into NT Indigenous communities.
The Intervention promised health, housing and education - but it has
delivered only racism, the destruction of Aboriginal control and
worsening social problems. After the allocation of more than $1 billion
the only houses that have been built with intervention funds have been
for government managers imposed on communities. The compulsory
quarantine of welfare payments is causing greater poverty, real hunger
and segregation in Centrelink and in shops.
The Rudd government has made symbolic gestures to try and signal a
break from the racism of Howard - apologising to the Stolen Generations
and recently signing on to the UN Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples. But this is hypocrisy. They have pursued Howard's
agenda of "mainstreaming" and assimilation with force, expanding the
Intervention, despite the recommendations of their own ‘review'.
In the NT, they have also overseen the withdrawal of funding from
remote ‘outstations', forcing migration into towns, and severe
restrictions on teaching in Aboriginal languages. The government has
pledged to re-instate the Racial Discrimination Act this spring, but
has insisted this will mean no ‘softening' of punitive Intervention
policies.
Land Rights not Leases - Stop the national expansion of Intervention policies
A key aspect of the Northern Territory Intervention has been the
compulsory acquisition of Aboriginal township land for five years.
Housing assets have been forcibly transferred from community councils
to the NT public housing agency. Over the past nine months, the
government has announced that only 16 of the 73 ‘prescribed
communities' will receive any funding for new housing. And these
communities have been given an ultimatum. They must sign township land
over to the government for between 40-90 years before any construction
can commence. While a handful of communities-desperate for housing and
under extreme pressure-have signed these leases, the majority say they
will never sign away Land Rights fought for over decades.
In March, the government announced it would extend the policy
nationally - no new housing will be built in any remote community
across Australia unless long-term leases are signed. And of the scores
of Aboriginal communities in NSW who desperately need housing, only two
- Walgett and Wilcannia - will receive funding.
The abolition of Aboriginal controlled Community Development
Employment Projects (CDEPs) was a cornerstone of Howard's Intervention,
forcing thousands of Indigenous people in the NT out of work. Now this
policy is also being rolled out nationally, with up to 30,000 CDEP jobs
facing the axe this July. In the face of looming global recession this
is madness. We need to fight these policies aimed at breaking up
Aboriginal control and forcing Aboriginal people to leave their
communities.
June 20 will be a national day of action, including a march in
Darwin led by Aboriginal people living under Intervention policies.
Join in the rally, march and concert in Sydney. Demand an end to Rudd's
racism and funding now for Aboriginal controlled housing and services
in all communities.
