A message to politicians

A message to all politicians: Make like Harold Holt and take a swim!

The frenzied spectacle of 'democracy' is a distraction that breeds cycnicism and apathy. It is a democracy where four wolves and one sheep discuss what to eat. After the election on August 21st we will continue to wake up in the morning only to find ourselves back in bed a mere matter of hours later - sad commuters between lack of desire and fatigue. We will continue to obey without even taking the trouble to say yes.

Or will we? Edgar Allen Poe said "We must abandon all models and study the possibilities."

Revolt is a necessity. Not in the sense of inevitability, but in the sense of a concrete condition of possibility. The necessity of the possible. Money is necessary in this society. Yet a life without money is possible. To experience this possibility it is necessary to destroy this society. Today we only experience what is socially necessary.

On one hand there is the existent, with it's habits and certainties. On the other hand there is revolt, the unknown bursting into the life of all. The possible beginning of the practice of freedom.

On August 21st, While over-18-year-old non-incarcerated Australian citizens vote on who will have the distinguished honour of exploiting us for another 3 years, we invite you to join us at the Jura Books discussion forum to view and debate an alternative. A new anarchist documentary film: "Theory and Practice: Conversations with Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn". We will be viewing the first half of this documentary where Chomsky discusses the evolution of his libertarian socialist ideals since childhood, his vision for a future post-capitalist society, and his views on the state, science, the Enlightenment, and the future of the planet.
-> (Anti)Election day discussion, 2pm Sat 21 August, Jura Books.

Jura Books is proud to be the Sydney distributor of the Peace Posers. This 32 page Broadsheet Newspaper unfolds to 30 posters and is available for FREE thanks to Breakdown Press and the Graham F Smith Peace Trust. The poster series contains 30 new, original and provocative political posters and poetry. The Peace Posters includes artwork and writing not only from across Australia, but also from Iran, USA, Spain, the Caribbean and France, and also by people whose lives cross many borders. Actions against war and towards the building of a peaceful society couldn’t be more relevant today. Especially considering not only Australia’s involvement in conflicts overseas (the war in Afghanistan has been raging for nine years) but also the involvement of Australia in the manufacturing of war machines, the use of Australia as a centre for US military bases, and the everyday injustice faced by Indigenous Australians particularly in areas under the Federal Government intervention.
-> Collect your FREE copy of the Peace Posters from Jura whenever we're open.

Also at Jura this month, a special night of experimental electronic music from PIMMON + HINTERLANDT + RAVEN.
PIMMON constructs slow currents of sounds using spontaneous composition techniques that are based on granular synthesis and other types of processing. Supported by live visuals from Dappler Effect. Pimmon has just performed at MUTEK festival in Montréal, and is also part of the Sydney Biennale. http://www.myspace.com/pimmon
HINTERLANDT is a German-Australian underground outfit known for long compositions encompassing raw energy, beautiful harmonies, complex rhythms, fragile ambiences, alarming noise, and silence. Hinterlandt has played in Helsinki, Cologne, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Lisbon, Berlin, and released 10 albums on small labels. http://www.hinterlandt.net/
RAVEN is the solo project of Peter Hollo, who is mainly known as the cellist in FourPlay String Quartet. While FourPlay are currently busy performing with bestselling author Neil Gaiman at the Sydney Opera House, Peter takes the sounds of his cello to a whole new dimension by processing them through loop pedals and a range of software applications. http://www.frogworth.com/raven/
