Welcome Visitor:

Smash the State, we're going solar on 1 June

The governments in this country are falling over themselves in their rush to sell out the climate.

The NSW Liberal Government has announced legislation that will severely undermine the solar power industry.
The Federal Labor government is sucking up to big business and watering
down their already pathetic carbon price. The market 'solution' of
Renewable Energy Certificates is just helping big polluters - their
price has dropped dramatically, making it more expensive to install
renewable energy.

All of this means that Jura (and everyone else) will have to pay more to switch to renewable energy.
There will be less financial return, and more climate change, over
time. In April, we were quoted $6,627, but now we've been told we'll
have to pay $7,339 to install 2.09KW of solar power at Jura.

But we're forging ahead. Capitalism and governments caused this crisis, but the community will fix it.
Research from UNSW has shown that the majority of the 120,000
households in NSW who have already installed solar power have household
income of less than $70,000 and live in low-income areas.

When researcher Nicky Ison spoke at Jura last month, she showed how community-owned renewable energy can de-carbonise, de-centralise and democratise. This is the future we're fighting for.

Jura is going to generate clean, renewable energy and be an inspiring model of sustainability - despite the government!
It's the right thing to do - for the climate, for future generations,
and to make Jura an inspiring model of sustainability. Our plan is to
install a 2.09KW grid-connected solar power system on 1 June. But we need your help.
So far the Jura community has raised $4,430! Thanks to recent donations
from RC ($500), PR ($250), LP ($50), JK ($500), PR ($50), NH ($300) BC
($50), AE ($100), SP ($300), IMB ($50), ET ($50) CB ($100) GA ($100) and
SD ($50). So there's only $2,630 to go. But if we don't raise enough money in the next few weeks, we'll have to get a smaller system.

Please make a donation now!

In the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, Jura Collective member Sakyo has travelled back to Japan
(where he is originally from) to work with Greenpeace on board the
Rainbow Warrior. They are undertaking independent radiation testing in
the waters near Fukushima. Everyone at Jura wishes Sakyo well in this
important and risky work. You can read Sakyo's latest blog entry (and
support his work) at
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/news/Blogs/makingwaves/rainbo...
Meanwhile there are daily anti-nukes protests happening in Japan:
nuclear power is dirty, dangerous and no solution to climate change!

Are you tired of the debate on climate change being held hostage by
radio shock-jocks, ultra-right politicians, big corporations and climate
deniers? Well so are our friends at Climate Action Newtown and Climate
Change Balmain-Rozelle. Members of these and many other community
climate action groups around Australia are participating in the 100% Renewable Campaign
'National Doorknock to Unlock Clean Energy' on Saturday 28th May. Find
out more at

-> Clean Energy doorknock, 28 May, in a suburb near you.

Our friends in the Sydney Abolitionist Collective and the Cross Border
Collective have organised a fundraiser for Critical Resistance, a
US-based grassroots organisation committed to ending society’s use of prisons and policing as an answer to social problems. Help raise awareness of prison abolitionism in Australia, and have an awesome time!
-> The Great Escape! Prison Abolition Fundraiser Party, Fri 3 June, 7pm at The Shandy, 45 Arthur Rd, Marrickville.

There are now 1,005 people on this Jura email announcement
list! It's a great achievement to have this resource for building the
movement for social change and for spreading the ideas of anarchism.
Congratulations to everyone who has forwarded this email on and told
their friends about Jura. Please keep spreading the word! We're also up
to 604 'fans' on facebook. 'Like' us at http://www.facebook.com/jura.books. We also just sent out letters to over 670 supporters
via snail mail (including a letter, poster, postcard and leaflet).
Didn't get one? Please email us and let us know your current address. Do
you know anyone who would be able to donate to a community owned solar
power system? Please forward them this email!
