Rocking and Dreaming

Dear Jura friends,

The Juran People's Committee for Propaganda & Culture would love you to watch and discuss two great films with us this month...
--> Rocking the Foundations. This 80s classic is a must-see for all workers, greenies, radicals and rat-bags. The film is an outstanding account of the NSW Builders Labourers Federation during its growing militancy, 1940-1975. Together with community activists, the BLF enacted Green Bans to save areas of community and environmental heritage from development. One of the first women to be accepted as a builders labourer, filmmaker Pat Fiske traces the development of a radical union that still provides us with an inspiring example of what a union can be. Screening & Discussion: 3pm, Sat 16 Oct, Jura Books
--> Czech Dream. In 2003, two students from the Czech Film Acade my posed as businessmen and persuaded an ad agency and a public relations agency to organise a huge campaign for the opening of a new supermarket named Czech Dream. The supermarket however does not exist and is not meant to. Billboards appeared on Czech highways, and 200,000 pamphlets were distributed in Prague. A jingle was recorded, and there was a series of television commercials. The advertising campaign slogans were "don't come" and "don't spend", etc. Still, the filmmakers succeeded in attracting more than 3000 shoppers to their "grand opening". Screening & Discussion: 2pm, Sat 30 Oct, Jura Books.

Please come to the solidarity action this Saturday for imprisoned Australian anti-fascist Jock Palfreeman. Jock stood up to 16 Nazis on a night out in Sofia, Bulgaria, and saved others and defended himself, but has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
